Seminar Features

Active Citizen Is Your Foundation
The exploration of a leader’s character contained in Active Citizen is foundational to all of the subsequent roles of an engaging leader, and by extension, to all of the subsequent Citizen Leader Seminars. As such, in preparation for stepping into your public roles as an engaging leader, read, reflect on, and record your thoughts to the questions and concepts about your personal convictions, credibility and courage in Active Citizen before exploring the other roles.

Pre-Seminar Assignment
Each role begins with a pre-seminar assignment to be prepared by you in advance. The introductory remarks and the questions that I pose in the assignment prepare you for the role, and ask you to gather some data or information that you will use during the seminar. Several of the assignments encourage you to choose a tangible, current initiative or project to work on as you go through the seminar – an initiative or project that is important to you, and one for which you would be willing to take on a leadership role.

Interactive Frameworks and Practical Tools for Repeatable Application
Each of the seminars provides an interactive framework and practical tools for you to apply to both yourself and to the initiative or project that you choose in the pre-seminar assignment. The reason for this: given all of my experience, and with plenty of corroborating evidence to back me up, I am convinced that in order for this learing to have longevity (or "legs"), it must be accompanied by immediate and meaningful application.

You will find that the tools you learn in any one of The Citizen Leader Seminars will have use and applicability in the roles that you will explore in other seminars.

Peer Support
Participants will form Peer Support Groups to share insights and practice new behaviors in a safe environment, with the intent of enhancing the learning for all.

Practical Next Steps
In an additional effort to give each role “legs,” I provide you with recommended next steps at the conclusion of each seminar. It is my intent that these next steps be reminders to you for what you can do over and over again to extend your learning, deepen you growth, strengthen your bonds with others, and continue to make meaningful contributions in your world.

Flow of Concepts and Summary of Questions
In The Citizen Leader guide and workbook, I provide either a summary of the questions or a set of “talking points” that make up the substantive content of the interactive frameworks. These summaries of the seminars’ concepts, questions and queries will allow you to quickly and regularly review the materials and, more importantly, apply…apply…apply!

The Citizen Leader Seminars – Individually or Combined
Each of The Citizen Leader Seminars is a stand-alone or self-contained unit. Each offers a unique framework and practical tools for application to the specific leadership role you are exploring. This allows you to take on and work through any individual leadership role one at a time, or on an as needed basis to address an immediate or current need or concern.

You and your group can expect to derive meaningful and applicable benefits by investing approximately seven hours in each role. Oftentimes, my clients will structure a seminar session by combining several roles into a series, and conduct it over a couple of days. Some have woven them into a leadership development curriculum, and spaced them out over time for ongoing leadership learning and growth.

Benefits for Multiple Audiences
The interactive frameworks and tools in The Citizen Leader Seminars deliver distinct and diverse benefits when used as a template for practical work sessions by either the members of an intact work group or by diverse individuals from across an organization or community.

For an intact work group, each seminar can provide a unique structure to help the members of the group focus and make progress on a specific current issue or initiative. The content of each seminar acts as the vehicle to prompt a rigorous and thorough exchange of ideas. As a result, the members of the group can and do get clearer with one another, uncover and understand differing points of view, align around common interests and intents, and commit to tangible next steps for advancing the initiative.

For diverse individuals from across an organization or community, the collegial yet challenging conversations that are prompted by the content of each seminar provide a forum for breaking down barriers, identifying possible partners for collaboration, and building relationships between and among individuals for whom forming new alliances can be a meaningful current step toward future success.
